Faculty Bio

Brian Bak, violin


Brian Bak received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at The Juilliard School, where he was a recipient of the C.V. Starr scholarship, the Juilliard Merit Scholarship, and the Samsung scholarship. He received the prestigious Artist Diploma from Yale University. Mr. Bak's has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras including the Tampa Bay Symphony, the Central Florida Philharmonic, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Boca Raton Symphony, the Florida Young Artists Orchestra, and the Sewanee Festival Orchestra. He has given performances internationally across South America, Europe, and Asia. Mr. Bak is a supporter of contemporary composers and is the current featured violin soloist for world renowned composer Eric Genuis' US tour. 


As an orchestral musician, Mr. Bak has held principal positions with the Juilliard Orchestra, the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra, and the Yale Philharmonia. He has performed under renowned conductors such as Alan Gilbert, Fabio Luisi, Michael Tilson Thomas, James Conlon, and James Levine. In 2008, Mr. Bak was a selected member of The Juilliard Orchestra's China Tour. In 2011, he was personally appointed by Lorin Maazel to be the principal violinist of the Castleton Festival for a series of highly acclaimed concerts. Mr. Bak is the current concertmaster of the New Haven based Delphi Chamber Orchestra.


Dedicated to musical outreach, Mr. Bak has been a member of Lincoln Center's Community Outreach Program and was a recipient of the Gluck Community Fellowship. As a member of Juilliard's educational outreach program, Mr. Bak debuted the ongoing series "Juilliard @ the Korea Society."


Mr. Bak has performed at prestigious summer music festivals such as ENCORE school for strings, Schlern International Music Festival in Italy, Aspen Music Festival and School, Kennedy Center Summer Music Institute, Music Academy of the West, Great Mountains Music Festival and School, Pacific Music Festival, and the Atlantic Music Festival.


Mr. BakÕs primary teachers have included Hyo Kang and David Chan, and he has studied chamber music with members of the Tokyo Quartet and the Emerson Quartet. An active teacher, Mr. Bak was formerly a Teaching Artist at Yale University and was a faculty member at the Long Island City Academy of Music. Currently, he is a faculty member at New York Music School.
